Professor Geert Boering, affiliate retired member, Groningen, The Netherlands
1929 - 2015
Professor Boering was appointed head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial (OM) Surgery of the former Academic Hospital in Groningen in 1961, and in 1966, was appointed professor in this discipline at the University of Groningen; a position he held until his retirement in 1994.
Professor Boering's PhD thesis on “Arthrosis deformans van het kaakgewricht” [Temporomandibular joint osteoarthrosis] reported his longitudinal study of wear and pain of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Recognized as a standard work on TMJ pathology, this paper put the OM surgery clinic in Groningen on the map as an internationally recognized TMJ Clinic. Professor Boering's 500-page thesis was reissued in 1994, and almost 30 years later it remains topical and is still regularly cited. Professor Boering also wrote several textbooks for dental students.
Professor Boering contributed significantly to the dental profession. We lose in Professor Boering an outstanding personality, and a pioneer in the development of the field of oral-maxillofacial surgery. An era has ended.
